US Lead
Biological Assessment and Management

The abandoned US Lead facility in Hammond, Indiana was one of the worst cases of lead pollution in Indiana history. The site also consists of 80 acres of natural area that includes marsh, river, savanna, and dune-and-swale areas. The biological diversity is significant with numerous State and Federal threatened and endangered species. Population declines began to occur. Clean up operations may have threatened the viability of these populations further. Of particular concern were the Marsh Wren and Franklin's Ground Squirrel.

For these species, we produced comprehensive endangered species studies. We produced a full inventory and population studies of plants and animals, wetland permits for planned activities, innovative methods for the encapsulation of lead in the bottom of marshland, and re-vegetation plans for the correction action management unit. {header}
